Gianni Vattimo
Complete Works
|
Meltemi Editore is starting a major and demanding editorial enterprise: the publicaton of Gianni Vattimo’s Complete Works.
Born at Turin in 1936 Vattimo, disciple of Pareyson and Gadamer, is one of the best contemporary thinkers who combined philosophical commitment with social and political activity. Member of the European Parliament from 1999 to 2004, his works have been translated in eightheen languages and diffused worldwide. Vattimo’s intellectual path is aimed at devising a contemporary hermeneutic ontology supporting the “weak tought” against the ideological “strong thoughts” typical of the philosophical systems. Vattimo’s philosophy is therefore an aanswer to the crisis of the great currents of nineteenth and twentieth centuries: hegelism, marxism, pnenomenology, psychoanalysis, structuralism. According to Vattimo there are no indisputabile grounds, and the weak thought is an attitude of postmodernity which accepts the burden of “error” and all that is historical and human: the notion of truth, finally shaped through an human mould (and not vice versa) is then revealed in its creative aspect as play and rethoric. The eleven volumes of the Works are divided in several books. The collection is opened by an Introductory volume with a Presentation by the Author, the Introduction by the Editors – Mario Cedrini, Alberto Martinengo and Santiago Zabala – and the plan of the work. Each volume will collect published and unpublished texts, collected following a thematic rationale not always in line with the chronological order of the publicatons.

Vattimo’s works cover many different areas, ranging from his early research in ancient aesthetics (Il concetto di fare in Aristotele, 1961), to the study of avant-garde poetics (Poesia e ontologia, 1967), from german philosophy of XIXth and XXth centuries (Essere, storia e linguaggio in Heidegger, 1963, Introduzione a Heidegger, 1971, Il soggetto e la maschera, 1974, Introduzione a Nietzsche, 1984) to the Pensiero debole (1983, with Pier Aldo Rovatti). With La fine della modernità (1985), La società trasparente (1989 e 2000), Nichilismo ed emancipazione (2003) Vattimo foresee the positive implications of the dialogue between hermeneutics and nihilism in the making of laws and customs grounded on the respect of everyone freedom, rather than on assumed “natural” norms.
In Credere di credere (1996), Dopo la cristianità (2002) and Il futuro della religione (2005) Vattimo’s thought reaches the ultimate limits of religion, interpreting the Christian message of charity as a solid ground to build a society of tolerance.
