Arturo Lanzani
Italian landscapes

Over the last fifty years of Republican life, Italian landscape undertook a dramatic transformation, after long periods of slow and small changes. This essay presents a wide and complete overview of this process, questioning about future scenarios and politics to be implemented. In the first part of the book, Lanzani offers a reading of major settlement changes with a careful consideration of the plurality of contexts and internal landscapes. He also provides a detailed account of the actual meanings and limits of a landscape politics today. In the second part some specific features of contemporary are carefully examined, focusing on the most momentous economic and social changes – the reorganization of commercial settlement, and the progressive inclusion of communities of migrants. Finally, two specific topics are discussed: the redesign of city centre and peripheries in Milan, and the need for an extensive promotion of ordinary landscapes in areas with diffuse urbanization.

Arturo Lanzani teaches Geography of landscape and environment and City planning at the Politecnico di Milano. His books include I territori al plurale [Territories in the plural], Il territorio che cambia (with S. Boeri and E. Marini) [The changing territory], and Metamorfosi urbane (with D. Vitali) [Urban metamorphoses].
